Key Calendar Terms
There are a number of terms we must define to get more acquainted with the Mayan calendar. These terms were used daily with the Mayans to communicate the date and time of year with others in their communities. These significant terms include the following:
Kin
In the Mayan language, Kin means day. These symbols to the right represent the twenty days that are found in the Tzolkin calendar.
Uinal
Uinals are represented by the symbols to the right and each uinal is a month in the Mayan calendar. There are 19 months in the Mayan calendar, and therefore 19 pictures to the right.
Numbers
Numbers were also used by the Mayan calendar to help write dates. These numbers were placed next to the picture symbols. Dots represent 1 unit and a bar represents 5 units.
