Background
The Maya Calendar was used by the Mayans starting in 5th century BCE. This calendar is based on a system which was commonly used through out their region. The mayan calendar is a system of calendars that began in pre-Columbia Central America The Mayan people felt that it was very important to record and keep track of their history. Although the Maya weren't the first to use a calendar, their structure and refinements were much more sophisticated. The Maya calendar is said to be one of the "best-documented" calendars and its major use was to predict events that would occur in the civilization's future.
